And here is the card I created:
I've said it before, and I'll be saying it for a long time: these are so hard for me!! As you can see, I decided to go with the color scheme and kind of used the color swatch as the background for my card. I picked coordinating colors of card stock and used some distress inks to darken the ones that didn't quite match. Then, I thought the colors were a little too prominent, so I added a sheet of vellum. It worked perfectly to soften the colors, but I adhered it with spray adhesive thinking I would avoid obvious adhesive showing through. I was wrong as the spray adhesive left little dots of glue that definitely showed through! So I had the brilliant idea to emboss the background, but since it was already adhered to the card base, the only embossing folder I had that was large enough was this damask folder. It is one of my favorites, but it kind of gives a feminine feel to this otherwise masculine looking card! What do you think? Does the damask make it look too feminine, or do you think it still looks masculine enough?

I think it looks fine for either. And love your idea of puting strips of the color together. Isn't it frustrating when best laid plans don't go as we thought they would??? Love the image you used - think that might be on my next order.
Lol...as you know, they are my least fave, too! But girl, you ALWAYS rock them! Great job, once again! I was stuck on birds - never thought to go with colors and a different image - way to think outside the box, dear friend!!!
What a fabulous birthday card, love your background and your coloring on the ribbon and box!
A fabulous card love the coloured embossed strips of card thank you for joining in at the Alphabet Challenge
You sound like me -- I keep trying things to rescue my cards till I finally run out of options. Sometimes I keep it, and sometimes it goes in the trash (smile!). Your card turned out awesome - love the stripes and the embossing!!
I like what you did with this challenge. I too sometimes struggle with this one. I still haven't used this present stamp, thanks for the inspiration.
I do like how you've done that background. It's very effective. Thanks for joining us at The Alphabet Challenge. Love Dawn x

The inspiration photo is beautiful and i love how you incorporate the colours with stripes! I think the embossing still works for a masculine card because it almost looks like a Celtic design. But i also think the card would equally suit a feminine recipient. Thank you so much for playing along with the Penny Black and More Challenge.
